Date Event
851 the islands are indicated on the Arab maps.
1502 the islands are indicated on the Portuguese maps.
1650-1730 the islands become a haven for pirates.
1742 Commander Lazare Picault leads the first French expedition to these islands.
1756 In the name of the King of France, Captain Nicolas Morphey officially takes possession of the islands, named Séchelles in honor of the Intendant of Finance.
1770 The French businessman Broyer du Barré founds the first establishment in Les Séchelles on Sainte-Anne Island.
1778 French Lieutenant Charles de Romainville takes control of the colony and launches the Institution which will become Victoria.
1794-1811 under the mandate of the French governor Quéau de Quincy, the Seychelles fly the British flag or the French flag depending on the buildings that stop there.
1811 The British take possession of the Seychelles, which become Seychelles and dependent on Mauritius.
1835 slavery is abolished in the Seychelles.
1903 The Seychelles, freed from the tutelage of Mauritius, become a Crown colony.
1964 two political parties are founded, the SPUP and the SDP.
1967 Universal suffrage is introduced on the occasion of the election of the Legislative Council.
1972 an international airport is inaugurated on the island of Mahé.
1975 The Seychelles becomes an autonomous colony of the United Kingdom.
1976 On June 29, the Seychelles becomes a Commonwealth Republic of 47,612. A coalition government is formed around James Mancham (SDP), President of the Republic, and France-Albert René (SPUP), Prime Minister. On June 5, a coup overthrows President Mancham and brings to power his Prime Minister, France-Albert René.
1984 France-Albert René is re-elected President of the Republic. Visit of Pope John Paul II.
1989 France-Albert René is re-elected President of the Republic
1990 visit of President François Mitterrand.
1991 establishment of multipartyism.
1992 election of a constituent commission.
1993 adoption of the new Constitution.
1998 France-Albert René is re-elected President of the Republic.
2001 candidate of the SPPF (Popular Progressive Front of Seychelles) in the context of early presidential elections, France-Albert René is re-elected President of the Republic for a five-year term, with 54.19% of the votes cast. His main rival, the Reverend Ravel Ramkalawan, candidate of the SNP (Seychelles National Party) is credited with 44.95% of the vote.
2002 President René organizes early legislative elections which confirm his position through the success of his party, the SPPF winning 23 seats, against 11 for the SNP.
2004 the sanzman! After twenty-seven years at the head of state, President René resigns, because of his age (68), and gives way to his vice-president James Alix Michel, who is sworn in on April 14. He is called to preside over the country until the 2006 presidential election.
2006 the presidential election of July 30, 2006 confirms James Michel at the head of the Seychelles state.
2007 the early election of the Parliament gives a new victory to the SPPF of President Michel, with 56.2% of the votes against 43.8% for the SNP, this score attributing 23 seats to the SPPF and 11 to the SNP.
2008 hit hard by the international economic crisis, the Seychelles find themselves in a virtual bankruptcy situation. The rupee fluctuates significantly.
2009 Seychelles undertakes to put in place the economic reforms required by the IMF. In exchange, the country obtains the nominal cancellation of 45% of its stock of debt.
2011 President Michel is re-elected in the presidential election on May 21. With 55.4% of the votes cast, he is ahead of Wavel Ramkalawan with 41.4%.
August 2011 Seychelles hosts the eighth edition of the Indian Ocean Islands Games. A great success.
December 2015 President Michel is re-elected for a third and final term. He won in the second round with 50.15% of the vote against 49.85% for his opponent Wavel Ramkalawan.
May 2016 an amendment to the penal code decriminalizes homosexuality.
June 29, 2016 commemoration of the 40 years of the country's independence.
September 27, 2016 resignation of President James Michel, following the defeat of his Lepep party in the legislative elections a few days earlier.
October 16, 2016 Vice-President Danny Faure replaces Michel at the head of state for the first cohabitation in the country's political history. The next presidential elections are scheduled for 2020.
