1494 | Christopher Columbus and his crew set foot in Jamaica, and become the first Europeans to discover this island. |
1509 | The Spaniards capture the island. Much of the indigenous population, the Arawaks, died from diseases imported by Europeans and from ill-treatment. |
1517 | The first black slaves arrive with the Spanish ships. |
1595 | First attacks by the English who want to appropriate the colony. |
1655 | Landing of 40 vessels and 10,000 men sent by the British crown. |
1670 | The Treaty of Madrid makes the island a property of the British Crown. Jamaica becomes the first sugar exporting nation thanks to the labor force imported from West Africa. |
1692 | Port Royal is devastated by an earthquake. Spanish Town became the new capital and the refugees from Port Royal founded the city of Kingston on the other side of the bay. |
1697 | Peace treaty signed with the French who keep Hispaniola while England keeps Jamaica. |
1739 | Creation of Mooretown and submission of the Maroon's in exchange for cultivable land. |
1795 | Second War of the Maroon's Rebellion. |
1838 | Abolition of slavery. |
1865 | The bloody rebellion of Morant Bay and the heavy reprisals of the English troops cause a debate in England on the status of the island, which will become a Crown colony. |
1872 | The capital is transferred to Kingston. |
1930 | The great economic depression in the United States deeply affects the economy of the island. |
1938 | The PNP (People's National Party) is founded by Norman Manley. |
1962 | Independence of Jamaica. Alexander Bustamante becomes Prime Minister. |
1988 | Cyclone Gilbert devastates part of the country. |
1999 | Crime outbreak in parts of Kingston and military intervention. |
2004 | Cyclone Yvan crosses the island and causes serious damage. |
2008 | Bruce Golding brings the JLP (Jamaica Labor Party) to power. |
2010 | The sponsor of Tivoli Garden (Kingston), suspected of arms and drug trafficking, is extradited to the United States after two weeks of violence in West Kingston between gangs and the army. 73 people are killed. |
2012 | The National People's Party, led by Portia Simpson Miller, comes to power. At the London Olympics, sprinter Usain Bolt becomes the only athlete to repeat a 100m / 200m double. In October, Hurricane Sandy hits Jamaica. |
April 2015 | Official visit of the President of the United States, Barack Obama, which had not happened since the passage of Ronald Reagan in 1982! |
July 2015 | The Blue Mountains are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a remarkable natural and cultural site. |
December 2015 | Kingston named "Creative City of Music" by UNESCO for its unique music (mento, ska, reggae, rocksteady and dancehall) and legendary singers, as well as its immense creative potential. |
February 2016 | the LJP wins the early parliamentary elections. |
March 2016 | Andrew Holness, head of the LJP, is invested Prime Minister. |
December 2016 | the LJP wins the local elections (with 9 of the 14 councils and the cities of Kingston and Montego Bay). |
2017 | Jamaica voted 12th preferred destination in the world by the Tripadvisor community, among the 25 selected. The country is named the 3rd coolest nation by CNN, with Usain Bolt as its icon. |
October 2017 | The LJP wins the by-elections hands down. |
November 2018 | Jamaican reggae is listed as intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO |
