Vietnamese Vocabulary → Greetings and Introductions → Introducing Yourself

As a Vietnamese language teacher with 20 years of experience, I am thrilled to teach you how to introduce yourself and ask someone's name in Vietnamese. These are essential skills that will allow you to communicate with locals and make new friends during your trip to Vietnam.

To start, let's learn some basic Vietnamese phrases and words that you can use to introduce yourself:

Basic Phrases for Introducing Yourself

  • Xin chào (seen chow) - Hello
  • Tôi tên là... (toy ten la) - My name is...
  • Tôi đến từ... (toy den tuh) - I'm from...
  • Rất vui được gặp bạn (raht vwee djuk gap bahn) - Nice to meet you

To ask for someone's name, you can say:

  • Bạn tên là gì? (bahn ten la zee) - What's your name?

Now, let's take a closer look at each phrase and learn some additional vocabulary.

Xin chào

"Xin chào" is a greeting that you can use to say hello to someone. You can use this phrase in formal and informal situations, such as when you meet someone for the first time or when you greet your friends and family. The phrase "xin chào" literally means "please come" in English.

My name is...

The phrase "tôi tên là..." is how you tell someone your name in Vietnamese. Simply replace the "..." with your name to make the sentence complete.

Here's an example Vietnamese table to help you get started:

Vietnamese Pronunciation English
Tôi tên là John "toy ten la John" My name is John

I'm from...

To say where you're from, use the phrase "Tôi đến từ...". Again, replace the "..." with the name of your country or city.

Here's another example table:

Vietnamese Pronunciation English
Tôi đến từ Mỹ "toy den tuh Mei" I'm from the United States.

Nice to meet you

To tell someone you're happy to meet them, say "Rất vui được gặp bạn". This phrase is perfect for both formal and informal situations.

Now that you have learned these basic phrases, it's time to practice them! Practice them with your Vietnamese friends or by using a language exchange app.

Tips to Improve Your Introductions

  • Always greet someone with "Xin chào" before introducing yourself. This shows that you are polite and respectful.
  • Use a friendly tone when you introduce yourself. Smile and make eye contact to make the other person feel more at ease.
  • If you're not sure how to pronounce someone's name, ask them to spell it for you. This will help you avoid mispronouncing their name in future conversations.

As you can see, introducing yourself in Vietnamese is quite easy. All it takes is learning some basic phrases and vocabulary. Don't be afraid to practice your Vietnamese skills and make new friends during your visit to Vietnam.
