Mountains & Hills[edit | edit source]

Galician has many words to describe the different types of mountains and hills:

Galician Pronunciation English
A montaña a mon-ta-ña Mountain
A serra a se-rra Mountain range
A cordilleira a kor-di-llêi-ra Mountain range, chain of mountains
A ladeira a la-dei-ra Slope
O pico o pi-ko Peak
A cima a si-ma Summit
O val o val Valley
O desfiladeiro o dés-fi-la-dei-ro Gorge
  • Person 1: ¿Cómo llego a la cima de la montaña? (How do I get to the top of the mountain?)
  • Person 2: Tienes que seguir el camino hasta la ladeira, luego tomar el sendero hacia el pico. (You have to follow the path up the slope, then take the trail to the peak.)

Water is one of the most important resources on the planet, and Galician has some interesting words to describe it's different forms:

O mar o mar Sea
Oceano Atlántico o-se-a-no a-t-lânti-ko Atlantic Ocean
O río o rí-o River
O lago o la-go Lake
A baía a ba-ía Bay
O estuario o és-tua-rio Estuary
A foz a fôz River mouth
  • Person 1: ¿Donde está el lago? (Where is the lake?)
  • Person 2: El lago está en el medio de la ciénaga. (The lake is in the middle of the swamp.)

Directions[edit | edit source]

Being able to understand directions is crucial when you are travelling in a new place. Here are some words you might need to know:

Galician Pronunciation English
A esquerda a es-kei-da Left
A dereita a de-rei-ta Right
Adiante a-di-ant-e Forward
Atrás a-trás Backward
Arriba a-ru-ba Up
Abaixo a-bai-jo Down
  • Person 1: ¿Dónde está la estación de autobuses? (Where is the bus station?)
  • Person 2: Primero, tienes que ir adiante, luego girar a la dereita. La estación está a dos calles de distancia. (First, you have to go forward, then turn right. The station is two blocks away.)

One of the great things about speaking a language is that it allows you to connect with people from all over the world. Here's how to say a few countries and continents:
