Welsh is a beautiful and unique language that is spoken by around 20% of the Welsh population. Numbers are an essential part of any language, and Welsh is no exception. In this lesson, we will learn the Welsh numbers from one to ten and how to use them in everyday situations.

Welsh Numbers

First, let's take a look at the Welsh numbers from one to ten:

Welsh Pronunciation English Translation
un "een" one
dau "die" two
tri "tree" three
pedwar "ped-war" four
pump "pim" five
chwech "chw-ech" six
saith "sey-th" seven
wyth "w-ith" eight
naw "now" nine
deg "day-g" ten

You can listen to the pronunciation of each number and repeat it until you get it right. Also, note that the pronunciation is not the same as the English pronunciation, so take your time to practice until you get it right.

Using Welsh Numbers

Once you have learned the Welsh numbers from one to ten, you can use them in many everyday situations. Here are some examples:

Counting

You can use Welsh numbers to count things just like in English. For example:

  • Un cath (one cat)
  • Dau gi (two dogs)
  • Tri pysgodyn (three fish)

Age

You can use Welsh numbers to talk about age, just like in English. For example:

  • Mae fy mrawd yn pedwar ar bymtheg oed. (My brother is fourteen years old.)
  • Roedd y plant yn chwe deg oed. (The children were sixty years old.)

Time

You can use Welsh numbers to talk about time, just like in English. For example:

  • Mae'r bysus yn cyrraedd am bump munud wedi naw. (The bus arrives at five minutes past nine.)
  • Rydych chi'n hwyr eisiau ar ôl deng munud (You are ten minutes late.)

Don't forget that in Welsh, the time is usually based on the twenty-four-hour clock.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we have learned the Welsh numbers from one to ten and how to use them in everyday situations such as counting, age, and time. Keep practicing the pronunciation until you feel comfortable saying each number. In the next lesson, we will learn how to tell time in Welsh, so stay tuned!
