Basic Relationship Vocabulary

Let's begin with some basic vocabulary for relationships in Ukrainian:

Я хочу познайомитись з новими людьми. (Ya khochu poznaiomytys z novymy liu-dmy) - I want to meet new people.
Мій колега був на зустрічі. (Miy koleha boov na zustrichi) - My colleague was at the meeting.
Щоденно я зустрічаюсь зі своїми сусідами. (Shchodenno ya zustrichayus zee svoiy-my su-seeda-my) - Every day I meet with my neighbors.

Family and Relationship Vocabulary

Using Possessive Pronouns in Relationships

Possessive pronouns are commonly used in Ukrainian to refer to family members or people in close relationships. Let's take a look at how to use them in sentences:

Його брат живе в Канаді. (Yoho brat zhyve v Kanadi) - His brother lives in Canada.
Наша родина любить грати в шахи. (Nasha ro-dyna lyuby-t hraty v shakhy) - Our family loves to play chess.
Ваші діти дуже талановиті. (Vashi dy-ty duzhe tal-anovyti) - Your children are very talented.
Їхній дім біля річки. (Yikh-niy dim bilja rich-ky) - Their house is by the river.

1. Ти знаєш своїх сусідів? (Ty znayesh svo-yikh su-seeda-v?) - Do you know your neighbors?

   * Так, ми знаємо одне одного вже багато років. (Tak, my znayemo od-ne od-noho vzhe bahato rokiv) - Yes, we have known each other for many years.

2. Чи маєш ти братів або сестер? (Chy ma-esh ty bra-tiv abo ses-ter?) - Do you have any brothers or sisters?

   * Так, у мене є старша сестра. А у тебе? (Tak, u mene ye starsha sest-ra. A u tebe?) - Yes, I have an older sister. How about you?

3. Ти маєш багато друзів? (Ty ma-esh bahato droo-ziv?) - Do you have many friends?

   * Не багато, але вони набагато кращі за кількість. (Ne bahato, ale vony nabahato kraschi za kil-kist) - Not many, but they are much better than the number.

4. А твоя дружина працює? (A tvo-ya droozhyna prats-yuye?) - Does your wife work?

   * Так, вона працює в банку. А твій чоловік? (Tak, vona prats-yue v bank-u. A tviy cholovik?) - Yes, she works in a bank. How about your husband?
