As a Japanese language teacher, I believe that learning about the famous tourist attractions and landmarks in Japan is essential for anyone who plans to visit the country. Cities

Japan is known for its vibrant and bustling cities that seamlessly blend modernity with tradition. Here are some of the most famous cities that you should definitely visit when you're in Japan:

Tokyo (東京)

Tokyo is the capital city of Japan and one of the busiest and most populous cities in the world. It is a city that never sleeps, with a vibrant nightlife, countless shopping districts, and world-renowned museums and galleries. Some of the top tourist attractions in Tokyo are the Sensoji Temple, the Tokyo Tower, and the Imperial Palace.

Kyoto (京都)

Temples

Japan has a rich history of Buddhism and Shintoism, and thus the country is replete with impressive temples and shrines. Here are some of the most popular temples to visit on your trip:

Kinkaku-ji Temple (金閣寺)

Kinkaku-ji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is a Zen Buddhist temple covered in gold leaf. It is located in Kyoto and is one of Japan's most popular attractions due to its stunning architecture and beautiful surroundings.

Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社)

Located on the island of Miyajima near Hiroshima, the Itsukushima Shrine is famous for its torii gate which appears to be floating in the sea at high tide. The shrine has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is not to be missed when visiting Japan.

Toshogu Shrine (東照宮)

Toshogu Shrine, located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The shrine is famous for its beautiful carvings and intricate details, like the famous carving of the Three Wise Monkeys that embody the “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” proverb.

Meiji Shrine (明治神宮)

Meiji Shrine, located in the heart of Tokyo, is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken who were integral in the modernization of Japan during the Meiji period. The shrine's serene atmosphere and forested grounds provide a peaceful respite from the bustling city surrounding it.

Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine (伏見稲荷大社)

Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine is located in Kyoto, and is known for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, which create an enchanted path leading to the top of Mount Inari. Visitors come to take pictures, to hike, or to seek for good fortune.

Izumo Taisha Shrine (出雲大社)

Located in Shimane Prefecture, Izumo Taisha Shrine is dedicated to Okuninushi-no-Mikoto, a deity of marriage and relationships, and is said to be the oldest shrine in Japan. The shrine's distinctive atmosphere and unique architecture create a sense of mystery and wonder that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Castles

Japanese castles, which were built mainly during the feudal era, are also renowned for their architectural beauty and historical significance. Here are a few of the most popular castles:

Himeji Castle (姫路城)

Known as the White Heron Castle because of its striking resemblance to the bird, Himeji Castle is one of the largest and most magnificent castles in Japan. It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site and the intricate labyrinth of trails and gardens that surround the castle add to its undeniable charm.

Matsumoto Castle (松本城)

Matsumoto Castle, located in Nagano Prefecture, is one of the most beautiful castles in Japan due to its distinct black and white color scheme. It was built during the warring era and has been amazingly well preserved, making it a perfect spot for history enthusiasts.

Natural Wonders

Last but not least, Japan's natural wonders are another must-see attraction that would appeal to anyone who values the natural world. Here are a few of the most famous ones:

Mount Fuji (富士山)

Mount Fuji is perhaps one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks, rising 3,776 meters above sea level. The mountain's symmetrical shape and snow-capped top make it an unforgettable sight, with its cherry blossom season, hiking trails and lakes that offer spectacular views.

Akiyoshi Cave (秋芳洞)

Akiyoshi Cave is the largest limestone cave in Japan, located in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Here, visitors can walk along a 1 km path and observe the ever-evolving and surprising shapes of the stalactites and stalagmites. As the cave is located a few hours from Hiroshima city, you may make a day trip out of it.

Jigokudani Monkey Park (地獄谷野猿公苑)

The Jigokudani Monkey Park is located in Nagano and is known for its hot spring-loving macaques. Here, visitors can watch the monkeys bask in the hot springs and frolic in the snow during the winter months.
