Central Khmer Grammar - Gender

Hi Central Khmer learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the gender system in Central Khmer. We will look at the different genders and how they are used in the language. We will also look at some examples of sentences using gender.

Genders

Central Khmer has two genders: masculine and feminine. The gender of a noun is usually determined by its ending. Masculine nouns usually end in a consonant, while feminine nouns usually end in a vowel. However, there are some exceptions to this rule.

Masculine Nouns

Masculine nouns usually end in a consonant. Here are some examples of masculine nouns:

Central Khmer Pronunciation English Translation
αž”αž»αžšαžŸ bor-s man
αž”αžΆαž™ bay boy
αž”αžΌαžš bor brother
αž”αž“αŸ’αž‘αžΆαž”αŸ‹ bontap friend
αž”αž‰αŸ’αž…αžΌαž› bong-choul entrance

Feminine Nouns

Feminine nouns usually end in a vowel. Here are some examples of feminine nouns:

Central Khmer Pronunciation English Translation
αžŸαžΆαž™ say woman
សអរី sa-ree girl
សអមុត samut sister
αžŸαž·αž‘αŸ’αž’αž· seth freedom
