Don't hesitate to look into these other pages after completing this lesson: Nouns and Pronouns & How to Use Be.
Forming the Future Tense
To form the future tense in Panjabi, we use the auxiliary verb "ਹੌਣਾ" (hona) meaning "to become". To make it clear that we are referring to the future, we use the present tense form of "ਹੌਣਾ" (hona) with the main verb in the infinitive form.
Here are some examples:
Panjabi | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ਮੈਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਣਾ ਹੌਣਾ | "mein parhaana honaa" | I will teach |
ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਣਾ ਹੌਣਾ | "tusiin parhaana honaa" | You will teach |
ਉਹ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਣਾ ਹੌਣਾ | "uha parhaana honaa" | He/She will teach |
ਸਾਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਣਾ ਹੌਣਾ | "saanu parhaana honaa" | We will teach |
ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਣਾ ਹੌਣਾ | "tuhaanu parhaana honaa" | You all will teach |
ਉਹਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਣਾ ਹੌਣਾ | "uhnun parhaana honaa" | They will teach |
As you can see, the auxiliary verb "ਹੌਣਾ" (hona) remains in the present tense and the main verb is in the infinitive form.
Examples in Context
To put what we have learned about forming the future tense in Panjabi into context, let's create a dialogue between two friends.
- ਵਿਕਰਾਮ (Vikram): ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਜਾਣੇ ਹੋ? (Kee tusiin kitthe jaane ho?) - "Where are you going?"
- ਸੁਖਜੀਤ (Sukhjeet): ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਮੇਲੇ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ। (Mein kisaan mele ja rihhaan haan)- "I am going to the farmer's market."
- ਵਿਕਰਾਮ (Vikram): ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਮੇਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਸਟਾਲ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਾ। (Tusiin kisaan mele vich kihhade stall te jaana)- "Which stall are you going to in the farmer's market?"
- ਸੁਖਜੀਤ (Sukhjeet): ਮੈਂ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਲ ਗੁੜ ਅਤੇ ਘੀ ਦੀ ਸਟਾਲ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ। (Mein lambey singh naal gurr te ghee di stall te jaana hai.) - "I am going to the stall with Long Singh for jaggery and ghee."
In this dialogue, Sukhjeet uses the future tense "ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ" (jaana hai) which means "will go." Sukhjeet could have also used the future tense with the auxiliary verb "ਹੌਣਾ" (hona) as follows: "ਮੈਂ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਲ ਗੁੜ ਅਤੇ ਘੀ ਦੀ ਸਟਾਲ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।" (Mein lambey singh naal gurr te ghee di stall jaanaa hovegi.) - "I will go to the stall with Long Singh for jaggery and ghee."
