Hello everyone! I hope you are enjoying this "Complete 0 to A1 Kannada Course" so far. Today, we are going to learn about an important aspect of Kannada grammar: conjunctions! Conjunctions help us link words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence, making our language more fluid and coherent. In this lesson, you will learn about the most common Kannada conjunctions like 'and', 'but', 'or', 'so', and 'because'. Are you ready? Let's get started!

Common Kannada Conjunctions

Here is a table of some common conjunctions in Kannada:

Kannada Pronunciation English
ಮತ್ತು mattu and
ಆದರೆ ādare but
ಅಥವಾ athavā or
ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ āddarinda so
ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ēkēndare because

As you can see, incorporating these conjunctions into your sentences will help you convey your thoughts more clearly, and your listeners will find your speech more natural and cohesive.

Here are some example sentences with conjunctions:

  • ನಾನು ಫಲ ಮತ್ತು ತರಕಾರಿ ಖರೀದಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. (Nānu phala mattu tarakāri kharīdisiddēne) - I bought fruits and vegetables.
  • ಅವಳು ಉತ್ತಮ ವಾದಿಕೆ, ಆದರೆ ಅವಳು ಬಹಳ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. (Avaḷu uttama vādike, ādare avaḷu bahaḷa doḍḍa abhimāniyāgiddāḷe) - She is an excellent speaker, but she is very arrogant.
  • ನೀವು ಅವನನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಅವಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣಲು ಬರುತ್ತೀರಾ ಅಥವಾ ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕಾಣಲು ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ? (Nīvu avanaṉnu mattu avaḷaṉnu kāṇalu baruttīrā athavā nānu nimmaṉnu kāṇalu baruttēne?) - Will you come to see him and her or should I come to see you?
  • ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾನು ಈ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಬದಲಿಸಲು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. (Āddarinda nānu ī badukaṉnu badalisalu nir'dharisiddēne) - So I decided to change this life.
  • ನೀವು ಹೊಸ ಉದ್ಯೋಗಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತೀರಿ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ನೀವು ಭವಿಷ್ಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದೀರಿ. (Nīvu hosa udyōgakke hōguttīri ēkēndare nīvu bhaviṣyada bagge prōtsāhitarāgiddīri) - You are going to a new job because you are excited about the future.
