PanjabiVocabulary0 to A1 Course → Everyday Vocabulary → Clothing and Accessories

As a Panjabi language teacher with 20 years of experience, I am excited to continue our journey in the Complete 0 to A1 Panjabi Course. In this lesson, we will focus on everyday vocabulary related to clothing and accessories. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to confidently name different types of clothing and accessories in Panjabi.

Clothing in Panjabi

Let's begin with the basics. In Panjabi, clothing is known as "vastra" (ਵਸਤਰ). Here is a list of various clothing items and their names in Panjabi:

Panjabi Pronunciation English
ਪਟਕਾ paṭkā turban
ਸਲਵਾਰ salwār loose pants
ਕਮੀਜ਼ kamīz shirt
ਕੁਰਤਾ kuratā tunic
ਘਘਰਾ ghaghṛā long skirt
ਚੁੰਡਾ chuṇḍā shawl
ਧੋਤੀ dhotī traditional men's garment
ਵਿਸਕਾ viskā scarf/stole
ਜੁੱਤੇ juṭṭe shoes
ਝੁਮਕੇ jhumke earrings
ਬਾਲੀ bālī hoop earrings
ਹਾਥਫੂਲ hāthphūl bracelet

As you can see from the table above, the pronunciation of the Panjabi words is written using the English alphabet. However, please keep in mind that the actual pronunciation may differ slightly due to the unique sounds in the Panjabi language.

Now, let's take a closer look at some of these clothing items.

Turban

The turban, or "paṭkā" (ਪਟਕਾ), is a traditional headwear worn by men in the Panjabi culture. It is made up of a long strip of cloth wrapped around the head a few times. The turban is an important part of the Sikh faith and symbolizes honor, self-respect, and courage. The style and color of the turban can vary depending on the region.

Salwar and Kameez

The "salwār" (ਸਲਵਾਰ) is a loose-fitting pant that is typically worn with a long shirt known as a "kamīz" (ਕਮੀਜ਼). This is a common outfit worn by women in the Panjabi culture, especially during festivals and religious events. The salwar kameez comes in various colors, fabrics, and styles, ranging from plain and simple to heavily embroidered.

Jutti

The "juṭṭe" (ਜੁੱਤੇ) is a traditional shoe worn by both men and women in Panjabi. Juttis are known for their intricate embroidery and come in a variety of colors and styles. They are also worn during special occasions and weddings.

Accessories in Panjabi

In addition to clothing, accessories also play an important role in Panjabi culture. Here are some of the most common accessories and their names in Panjabi:

Panjabi Pronunciation English
ਕਨਗਾ/ਕੰਗਣ kaṇgā/kangṇ bracelet
ਕੰਧਾ kanthā necklace
ਟੋਪੀ ṭopī hat/cap
ਬਿੰਦੀ bindī forehead decoration
ਕੀੜੇ kīṛe earrings
ਹਾਥ ਵਾਡਾ hāth vāḍā bangle

Let's take a closer look at some of the accessories.

Bangles

"Hath vāḍā" (ਹਾਥ ਵਾਡਾ) refers to a set of bangles, usually made up of glass or metal, worn on the wrist of women in Panjabi. These bangles come in various colors and designs and are considered a symbol of femininity and married life.

Bindis and Tikkas

"Bindī" (ਬਿੰਦੀ) is a decoration worn on the forehead by women in Panjabi. It is usually a small dot made of red or black color and is considered a symbol of auspiciousness and good fortune. "Tikka" (ਟਿੱਕਾ) is a similar decoration, but it is worn slightly above the forehead, usually accompanied by a chain.

Practice Sentences

It's time to practice! Here are some sample sentences using the clothing and accessory names that we have learned:

  • ਸਾਡਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿਸਕੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। (Sādā parivār viskē wālā hai.) - My family wears scarves.
  • ਹਾਥਫੂਲ ਵਧੀਆ ਦਿਖਣਗੇ। (Hāthphūl vadīā dikhaṇgē.) - The bracelet will look good.
  • ਮੈਂ ਸਲਵਾਰ ਕਮੀਜ਼ ਪਹਿਨਦਾ ਹਾਂ। (Main salwār kamīz pahindā hān.) - I wear salwar kameez.

Conclusion

Congratulations! By the end of this lesson, you should have a good understanding of the basic vocabulary related to clothing and accessories in Panjabi. Don't forget to practice your pronunciations and use the vocabulary in practical settings to improve your Panjabi skills. In the next lesson, we will learn about vocabulary related to family and relationships in Panjabi.
