As a beginner in Japanese, it is important to learn how to ask and answer basic questions to communicate effectively with others. In this lesson, you will learn the question words and phrases in Japanese and how to use them properly in conversation.

Question Words

In Japanese, question words are called "疑問詞" (ぎもんし, gimonshi), which are used to ask for specific information. Below are some basic question words and their meanings:

何 (なに) na-ni What?
いつ i-tsu When?
誰 (だれ) da-re Who?
どこ do-ko Where?
なぜ na-ze Why?

These question words can be combined with other words to form more complex questions. For example:

  • 何を食べましたか? (nani wo tabemashita ka?) - What did you eat?
  • いつ行きますか? (itsu ikimasu ka?) - When will you go?
  • 誰が来ましたか? (dare ga kimashita ka?) - Who came?
  • どこに行きますか? (doko ni ikimasu ka?) - Where will you go?
  • なぜ来なかったんですか? (naze konakatta n desu ka?) - Why didn't you come?

Question Phrases

Apart from question words, there are also question phrases that can be used to ask questions in Japanese. These phrases are commonly used in daily conversation and are important to know. Below are some examples:

~がありますか? ~ga arimasu ka? Do you have ~?
~はどこですか? ~wa doko desu ka? Where is ~?
~はいつですか? ~wa itsu desu ka? When is ~?
~は何ですか? ~wa nan desu ka? What is ~?

Examples:

  • 電話はありますか? (denwa wa arimasu ka?) - Do you have a phone?
  • 駅はどこですか? (eki wa doko desu ka?) - Where is the train station?
  • パーティーはいつですか? (pa-ti- wa itsu desu ka?) - When is the party?
  • 今日の予定は何ですか? (kyo no yotei wa nan desu ka?) - What is your schedule for today?

Practice

Here are some questions and answers to practice using the question words and phrases:

  • Q: 今日は何曜日ですか? (kyo wa nan youbi desu ka?) - What day is it today?
 A: 今日は月曜日です。 (kyo wa getsuyoubi desu.) - Today is Monday.
  • Q: ペンがありますか? (pen ga arimasu ka?) - Do you have a pen?
 A: はい、あります。 (hai, arimasu.) - Yes, I do.
  • Q: どこで昼ご飯を食べますか? (doko de hirugohan wo tabemasu ka?) - Where do you have lunch?
 A: 会社で食べます。 (kaisha de tabemasu.) - I have lunch at my workplace.

Practice with as many questions and answers as you can to become comfortable with using question words and phrases.
