"Have" as an Auxiliary Verb[edit | edit source]

In Urdu, "have" can be used as an auxiliary verb to form perfect tenses. In this context, "have" is used to indicate an action that was completed at some point in the past. Here is an example:

Urdu Pronunciation English
میں نے کافی پیا Main ne kafi piya I have drunk enough
تم نے کل تک نہیں کھایا؟ Tum ne kal tak nahi khaya? Have you not eaten until yesterday?
وہ خودبخود تمام کام کرچکا ہوگا۔ Woh khudbakhud tamam kaam karchuka hoga He must have done all the work himself.

In these examples, "have" is used with the past participle of the verb. The past participle of regular verbs is formed by adding "-ا" at the end of the infinitive verb, while the past participle of irregular verbs varies.

"Have" as a Main Verb[edit | edit source]

In Urdu, "have" can also be used as a main verb to express possession or ownership. Here's an example:

Urdu Pronunciation English
میرے پاس کتاب ہے۔ Meray paas kitaab hai. I have a book.
تم کے پاس کتنے پیسے ہیں؟ Tum ke paas kitnay paisay hain? How much money do you have?
اسکے پاس مبینہ ثبوت نہیں ہے۔ Iske paas ma-beena saboot nahi hai. He doesn't have any evidence.

In these examples, "have" is used to express possession, and the noun that follows it is in the oblique form.

"Have" and Negation[edit | edit source]

To form the negative of "have" in Urdu, we use the word "نہیں" (nahin) after the verb. Here is an example:

Urdu Pronunciation English
میرے پاس کتاب نہیں ہے۔ Meray paas kitaab nahi hai. I don't have a book.
تم کے پاس کتنے پیسے نہیں ہیں؟ Tum ke paas kitnay paisay nahi hain? How much money don't you have?
اسکے پاس مبینہ ثبوت نہیں ہے۔ Iske paas ma-beena saboot nahi hai. He doesn't have any evidence.

In these examples, "نہیں" (nahin) is used to negate the verb "have".
