In this lesson, we will learn how to give our opinion in Sinhala. Giving your opinion is important in any language because it allows you to express yourself and communicate with others. So, whether you agree or disagree, it's important to be able to say it correctly and with confidence. Let's get started!

Expressing Agreement[edit | edit source]

When you agree with something, you can use the following phrases:

Sinhala Pronunciation English
මමත් (එකතුවක්) හදන්නේ ඇයව තියෙන්නේ. "Mama-th (ekathuwak) hadanneth aya-wa tien-ne." "I think (the same thing) as her/him."
මගේ උදව් කරනවා. "Mage udawa karana-wa." "I share the same view."
හරියටම සමාවන්නෙ. "Haritama samawanne." "It's a good idea."

Example Dialogue:

  • Person 1: මමත් යන්න මමේ උදව් දැක්වෙලා. ("Mama-th yannne mama-e udawa dek-wela.")
  • Person 2: මගේ උදව් ජනා හොඳයි. ("Mage udawa jan-a hodai.")

Translation in English:

  • Person 1: I think this idea is correct.
  • Person 2: My opinion is it's a good idea.

Expressing Disagreement[edit | edit source]

When you disagree with something, you can use the following phrases:

Sinhala Pronunciation English
මමත් (එකතුවක්) එපා කරනවා. "Mama-th (ekathuwak) epa karanawa." "I don't think so."
මගේ උදව් ජනාවෙන් වෙනස් වෙමු. "Mage udawa jan-a-wen wenas wemu." "I have a different opinion."
මේ නිසා නොදන්නවා. "Me nisa na-dannawa." "I don't agree with this."

Example Dialogue:

  • Person 1: මමත් මේ විදිහට සමාවන්න පුළුවන්. ("Mama-th me widihata samawanne puluwan.")
  • Person 2: මට මගේ උදව් ඉතින් වැඩිදියුණු කරනවා. ("Mata mage udawa itin wedi-diyunun karanna-wa.")

Translation in English:

  • Person 1: I agree with this point.
  • Person 2: My opinion is completely different.

Expressing Certainty[edit | edit source]

When you are certain about something, you can use the following phrases:

Sinhala Pronunciation English
මම ඒ විස්තරයේ සිටින්නේ විශේෂත්වයි. "Mama a vistharay siitinna-wa visheshtai." "I am sure about the information."
මම නිවැරදියි. "Mama niwara-dai." "I am certain."
මට මේ සඳහන් පැවතියි. "Mata me sandahan pawa-tiyai." "I am confident in this statement."

Example Dialogue:

  • Person 1: කොහොමද අපි කෙලියට යම් දේ සිද්ධිය හැක්කේ නැත්තෙන්ම ඉදන් නැතියයි. ("Kohomada api kelita yam da siddeiya hethuk-ké naththenna itha-nam nenethiyi.")
  • Person 2: මම එතරම් විශ්වාසී. ("Mama etram vishwas-i.")

Translation in English:

  • Person 1: I think we can't make it to the meeting on time if we leave now.
  • Person 2: I am sure we can make it on time.

Expressing Doubt[edit | edit source]

When you have doubts about something, you can use the following phrases:

මම ඒ විස්තරයේ සිදුවනවා නම් එකක් දෙන්නේ නැත. "Mama a vistharay siyuvanawa nam ekak denne neththam." "I am not sure about the information."
මම දැන් තියෙනවා නම් ඒ සම්බන්ධය වෙනස් විය හැකිය. "Mama dann-tienne nam e sam-bandayen wenas wiyans viya hiyakida." "I think there could be other reasons."
මට එතරම් දැනගන්නම් අපිට කුමක්දැයි පැහැදිල්ලෙන්නෙ. "Mata etram dannaganname api-ta kumak-da-yi pahadillen-nenneh." "I'm not sure what we should do."

Example Dialogue:

  • Person 1: මම උඹලා පැටවෙන්නේ දැන් නැහැ. ("Mama umbalaa pet-wennanawa danenne naha.")
  • Person 2: මට මේ විදිහට කවුරුද? ("Mata me widihata kawuru-da?")

Translation in English:

  • Person 1: I'm not sure if I can come with you.
  • Person 2: What should we do now?
