Hi Galician learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Galician grammar. The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an action that is dependent on another action. It is also used to express wishes and polite requests. We will look at how to form the conditional mood in Galician, as well as some examples of its use.

Once you've mastered this lesson, take a look at these related pages: Say Hello and Greetings in Galician, Questions & Negation.

Forming the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood in Galician is formed by adding the endings -ía, -ías, -ía, -iamos, -íades, -ían to the infinitive form of the verb. For example, the verb falar (to speak) would become falaría, falarías, falaría, falariamos, falaríades, falarían in the conditional mood.

Irregular Verbs[edit | edit source]

There are some irregular verbs in Galician which have different endings in the conditional mood. For example, the verb ser (to be) becomes sería, serías, sería, seriamos, seríades, serían in the conditional mood.

Examples of Use[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express hypothetical situations or actions that are dependent on another action. For example:

  • Se tiver tempo, irei á praia. (If I have time, I will go to the beach.)
  • Se ela me chamase, eu falaría con ela. (If she called me, I would speak to her.)

It is also used to express wishes and polite requests. For example:

  • Gostaría de ter unha casa grande. (I would like to have a big house.)
  • Por favor, se poderías axudarme, estaría moi agradecido. (Please, if you could help me, I would be very grateful.)
