Tatar Grammar - How to Use "Have"

Hi Tatar learners! 😊
In this lesson, we'll be learning how to use the verb "to have" in Tatar. We'll also be discussing some cultural information and interesting facts along the way, so stay tuned!

Introduction[edit | edit source]

The verb "to have" is a very important verb in Tatar, just as it is in English. It is used to indicate possession or ownership of something or someone. For example, "I have a book" or "She has a cat". In Tatar, the verb "to have" can be translated as "у менә (u menä)" for "I have", "у сездәр (u sezdär)" for "You have" (plural or formal) and "у улы (u uly)" for "He/She has". Similar to English, Tatar uses the verb "to have" to form compound tenses, such as the present perfect tense. Let's take a closer look at how to use "to have" in more detail.

Using "To Have" in Tatar[edit | edit source]

In Tatar, the verb "to have" is usually translated as "у" (u). Here are some examples of how to use it in a sentence:

Tatar Pronunciation English
у менә беләккәче китап ук (u menä beläkkäche kitap uk) oo me-nä beläk-kä-chee kee-tap-uk I have read a few books
у сездәр көчүч түнектә шәһәрүәдә үзәр (u sezdär köchüch tünektä şähäryädä üzer) oo ses-där kö-chuch tü-nek-tä sha-hä-rü-ädä ü-zer You (plural or formal) have lived in several cities
у улы бу яшерендә һыулған (u uly bu yaşerende hüylğan) oo ulı bu ya-ше-ren-de hüyl-ğan He/She has dreamt about this place

Note that the verb "to have" is generally used before the noun to indicate possession in Tatar, whereas in English it is the opposite. For example, "I have a book" would be "у менә китап (u menä kitap)" in Tatar.

Tatar also uses the verb "to have" to form compound tenses, such as the present perfect tense. The present perfect tense is used to describe an action that started in the past and continues into the present, or an action that occurred in the recent past. Here's how to form the present perfect tense in Tatar:

Tatar Pronunciation English
у менә китап ук утыр (u menä kitap uk utır) oo me-nä kee-tap-uk ü-tyr I have been reading a book
у сездәр җиңел утна (u sezdär jin-el utna) oo сes-där ји-нель ут-на You (plural or formal) have eaten breakfast
у улы берен карам (u uly beren karam) oo ulı be-ren ka-ram He/She has seen it

As you can see, the present perfect tense is formed by using the present tense of "to have" followed by the past participle of the main verb, which in Tatar is usually formed by adding "-н" ("-en") to the verb stem.
