Basics of Negation[edit | edit source]
In Marathi, we use the word ‘नाहीं’ (nāhīṁ) to express negation. For example, if we want to say "I am not hungry" in Marathi, we say "मला भूख नाहीं आहे" (malā bhūkh nāhīṁ āhe). Here, "नाहीं" (nāhīṁ) is used to negate the statement "I am hungry". We can also use the word ‘ना’ (nā) at the end of a sentence to express negation. For example, "मला भूख आहे ना" (malā bhūkh āhe nā) means "I am not hungry".
Another way to express negation is by using the word ‘काहीही’ (kāhīhī), which means "not at all" or "nothing". For example, "मी काहीही करत नाहीं" (mī kāhīhī karat nāhīṁ) means "I don't do anything at all".
We can also use the word "नाहीं" (nāhīṁ) as a standalone sentence to express negation. For example, "कुणीही येथे नाहीं" (kuṇīhī yēthē nāhīṁ) means "Nobody is here".
Negation of Verbs[edit | edit source]
To negate a verb in Marathi, we normally use the word "नाहीं" (nāhīṁ) after the verb. For example, "मी जात नाहीं" (mī jāt nāhīṁ) means "I am not going", and "तू खात नाहीं" (tū khāt nāhīṁ) means "You are not eating".
Sometimes, we use the word "नको" (nakō) as a negation in imperative mood. For example, "धमाल नको" (dhamāl nakō) means "Don't make noise" or "काम कर नको" (kām kar nakō) means "Don't work".
Below is a table that shows how to negate some common verbs in Marathi:
Marathi | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
मी आहे नाहीं | mī āhē nāhīṁ | I am not |
तू आहेस नाहीं | tū āhēs nāhīṁ | You are not |
ते करतात नाहीं | tē karatāt nāhīṁ | He/She doesn't do |
आम्ही जातो नाहीं | āmhī jātō nāhīṁ | We are not going |
तुम्ही वाचत नाहीं | tumhī vāchat nāhīṁ | You all are not reading |
Negation of Adjectives[edit | edit source]
To negate an adjective in Marathi, we usually use the word "नाहीं" (nāhīṁ) after the adjective. For example, "हे पुस्तक उत्तम नाहीं" (hē pustak uttam nāhīṁ) means "This book is not good".
We can also use the word ‘काहीही’ (kāhīhī) to negate adjectives. For example, "या प्रवासावर काहीही मज्जा नाहीं" (yā pravāsāvar kāhīhī majjā nāhīṁ) means "There is nothing enjoyable about this trip".
Below is a table that shows how to negate some common adjectives in Marathi:
Marathi | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
उत्तम नाहीं | uttam nāhīṁ | Not good |
भरपूर नाहीं | bharapūr nāhīṁ | Not enough |
दुर्दैवी नाहीं | durdhaivī nāhīṁ | Not unfortunate |
शांत नाहीं | shānt nāhīṁ | Not peaceful |
दूर नाहीं | dūr nāhīṁ | Not far |
Negative Pronouns[edit | edit source]
In Marathi, we use specific pronouns to express negation. The most common negative pronouns are "कोणही" (kōnahī) and "काहीही नाहीं" (kāhīhī nāhīṁ).
The pronoun "कोणही" (kōnahī) means "nobody". For example, "कोणही माझी सहायता करत नाहीं" (kōnahī mājhī sahāyatā karat nāhīṁ) means "Nobody helps me".
The expression "काहीही नाहीं" (kāhīhī nāhīṁ) means "nothing". For example, "काहीही नाहीं माझ्या चिंतांच्या उपाय" (kāhīhī nāhīṁ mājhyā chiṇtāñcyā upāy) means "There is nothing I can do about my worries".
