Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn about personal pronouns in the Assamese language. Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns in a sentence. Knowing the proper usage of personal pronouns is crucial to daily conversation in Assamese. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use personal pronouns correctly and confidently.

Personal Pronouns

In Assamese, there are four personal pronouns for singular subjects and two for plural subjects. The table below shows the personal pronouns in Assamese along with their pronunciation and English translation:

Assamese Pronunciation English
মোৰ môr I
তোমাৰ tomār You (singular)
সে se/হে He/She
আমিৰা amirā We
তোমাৰাও tomārāu You (plural)
তেওঁলৈ têolôi They

Note that the third-person pronoun "সে" (se) can mean both "he" and "she" in Assamese, as there is no gender distinction in the language.

Usage of Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns are used to refer to the subject of a sentence. The table below shows some examples of personal pronouns in use:

তেওঁলৈ চি চি কৰি বই পঢ়ি। têolôi si si kôri bôi pôrhi. They are making noise while reading a book.

As shown in the examples, personal pronouns are usually placed before the verb in a sentence.

Possessive Pronouns

In addition to personal pronouns, Assamese also has possessive pronouns, which are used to indicate ownership or possession. The table below shows the possessive pronouns in Assamese along with their English translations:

Assamese English
মোৰ My/Mine

সেৰ His/Her(singular)
আমাৰ Our(singular)
তোমাৰাও Your(plural)
তেওঁৰ Their(singular)

Note that the second-person possessive pronoun "তোমাৰ" (tomār) is used for both singular and plural ownership or possession.
