Basic Weather Vocabulary

Before we dive into describing specific weather conditions, let's learn some basic weather vocabulary first.

Use these vocabulary words to form simple sentences like "ⵛⴰⵣⴰⵍ ⴰⴷⵔⴰⵔ" (Cazal adrar - It's sunny and hot) or "ⵕⵉⵍⵉⵜ ⵜⵜⵜⵜ ⴰⴷⵔⴰⵔ" (Rilit tttt adrar - It's raining and thundering).

Describing Weather Conditions

Now that we know some basic vocabulary, let's learn how to describe different weather conditions in Tamazight.

Hot and Humid

When it's hot and humid, we use the following vocabulary:

  • ⵛⴰⵣⴰⵍ ⵎⵥⵉⵚⵉⵜ (Cazal mzizit) - very hot
  • ⵉⵜⴰⵍ ⴽⵓⴱⵍ (Ital kubl) - heavy humidity
  • ⴰⵊⴰⵔ ⴼⴷⴰⵢ (Ajjar fdhay) - to sweat
  • ⵣⴳⵉⴳ ⵖⴹⵏ (Zgig ghddn) - to feel sticky

You can use these phrases to describe a hot and humid day: "ⵛⴰⵣⴰⵍ ⵎⵥⵉⵚⵉⵜ ⴰⵊⴰⵔ ⴼⴷⴰⵢ" (Cazal mzizit ajjar fdhay - It's very hot and I'm sweating).

Cold and Windy

When it's cold and windy, we use the following vocabulary:

  • ⵓⴳⵜⴰⵛ ⴰⵎⴻⵙⴰⵜ (Ughtach amesat) - freezing
  • ⵎⵯⵉⵙ ⵉⵜⵉⵍ (Mwis itil) - icy
  • ⵜⴰⵣⴳⵯⴳⵍⴰⴹ ⴰⵍⴰⵍ (Tazgguglad alal) - to shiver
  • ⵜⴰⵔ ⴰⵉⴽⵓⴽ (Tar aikuk) - to cough

You can use these phrases to describe a cold and windy day: "ⵓⴳⵜⴰⵛ ⴰⵎⴻⵙⴰⵜ ⵜⴰⵣⴳⵯⴳⵍⴰⴹ ⴰⵍⴰⵍ" (Ughtach amesat tazgguglad alal - It's freezing and I'm shivering).

Rainy

When it's rainy, we use the following vocabulary:

  • ⵕⵉⵍⵉⵜ ⵓⴳⵉⴳⵉⵜ (Rilit ughigit) - pouring rain
  • ⵜⵜⵜⵜ ⵜⵜⵜⵜ (Tttt tttt) - thunder and lightning
  • ⵜⵜⵜⵜⵜⵜ ⵜⵜⵜⵜⵜⵜ (Tttttt tttttt) - lightning strikes
  • ⵜⴰⵢⴰⵢⵜ ⵜⵜⵜⵜ (Tayayt tttt) - a storm is coming

You can use these phrases to describe a rainy day: "ⵕⵉⵍⵉⵜ ⵓⴳⵉⴳⵉⵜ ⵜⵜⵜⵜ ⵜⵜⵜⵜ" (Rilit ughigit tttt tttt - It's pouring rain with thunder and lightning).
