Adverbs produced from Adjectives in Georgian

Most adverbs are produced by the adverbial case from adjectives. Some of them lose their case marker consonant, the final “-დ”.

Compare:

ნელი – ნელა (“slowly”), ჩქარი – ჩქარა (“quickly”), კარგი – კარგა/კარგად (“well”, “OK”), მაღალი – მაღლა (“up”, “upwards”), დაბალი – დაბლა (“down”, “downwards”), etc. Adjectives of manner: ნელა, ჩქარა, კარგა/კარგად, ცუდად, ავად (“badly”; “ill”); უცებ/უცბათ/უცაბედად (“suddenly”), შემთხვევით or უნებლიედ (“accidentally”), აუცილებლად (“for sure”).

Take some time to dive into these other pages after completing this lesson: The Conjugation System, Future Tense, Vocative case markers “—ო” and “—ვ” & The postposition of the Dative.
