Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn how to tell time in Javanese. You will learn how to express hours, minutes, and seconds using Javanese vocabulary. Telling time is an essential skill for communication, and this lesson will help you in daily conversations with native Javanese speakers.

Telling time in Javanese involves using a combination of numbers and words. The numbers used in Javanese are covered in the previous lesson, "Numbers 1-10." Therefore, to follow this lesson effectively, it is recommended that you complete that lesson first.

Expressing Hours

When telling time in Javanese, the word "jam" is used to indicate "hour." To express a particular hour, the word "iki" is used, which means "this." Here are some examples:

jam siji iki [jam siːd͡ʒi iki] It's one o'clock
jam loro iki [jam loɾo iki] It's two o'clock
jam telu iki [jam tɛlu iki] It's three o'clock

jam enem iki [jam ɛnɛm iki] It's six o'clock
jam pitu iki [jam pitu iki] It's seven o'clock
jam wolu iki [jam wolu iki] It's eight o'clock
jam sanga iki [jam saŋa iki] It's nine o'clock
jam sepuluh iki [jam sɛpuluh iki] It's ten o'clock

Note: "Iki" means "this" and it is not used to express the time. It is used to indicate which hour is being referred to.

Expressing Minutes and Seconds

To express minutes and seconds, the words "menit" and "detik" are used, respectively. "Menit" means "minute," and "detik" means "second." Here are some examples:

sepuluh menit setengah tujuh [sɛpuluh mɛnit sɛtɛŋa tudʒu] It's six forty
duapuluh menit setengah sebelas [duapuluh mɛnit sɛtɛŋa sɛbɛlas] It's ten thirty
tiga puluh menit siji [tiga puluh mɛnit siːd͡ʒi] It's half past one

Note: "Setengah" means "half" and is used to express half-hour.
