Belarusian Grammar → Adjectives → Superlatives

As a Belarusian language teacher with 20 years of experience, I understand that forming superlatives in Belarusian can be tricky. However, once you grasp the basic rules, it's easy to use them correctly. In this lesson, we will cover everything you need to know about forming superlatives in Belarusian.

What are superlatives?

Superlatives are used to describe something that is at the extreme end of a spectrum, either in a positive or negative sense. For example, "This is the best cup of coffee I've ever had" or "That was the worst movie I've ever seen." In Belarusian, we use superlatives to compare three or more things.

Forming superlatives

To form a superlative in Belarusian, we use the word "най" (nay), which means "the most." We add it to the beginning of the adjective and change the ending of the adjective to match the gender and number of the noun being modified.

Here are some examples:

Belarusian Pronunciation English
найкращы nay-krash-chy the best (masculine singular)
найкращая nay-krashh-a-ya the best (feminine singular)
найкращае nay-krash-hae the best (neutral singular)
найлепшы nay-lep-shy the best (masculine singular)
найлепшая nay-leps-ha-ya the best (feminine singular)
найлепшае nay-leps-hae the best (neutral singular)

Exceptions

There are a few exceptions to the rule when forming superlatives.

For adjectives with one syllable, we add the endings "-ш-" for masculine singular, "-шая" for feminine singular, and "-шае" for neutral singular. For example:

Belarusian Pronunciation English
найслаўсядлівышы nay-slaw-sya-dlі-vy-shy the most generous
найбольшая nay-bul-sha-ya the biggest
найкарацейшы nay-ka-rat-shey-shy the shortest

For adjectives with two syllables, we add the endings "-ш-" for masculine singular, "-шшая" for feminine singular, and "-шае" for neutral singular. For example:

Belarusian Pronunciation English
наймаладшы nay-ma-lad-shy the youngest
найбагаты nay-ba-ha-ty the richest
найдобры nay-do-bry the kindest

Conclusion

Forming superlatives in Belarusian is not too complicated once you grasp the basic rules. Remember to use the word "най" and change the ending of the adjective to match the gender and number of the noun being modified. With practice, you will master the use of superlatives in no time.

I hope this lesson has been helpful. In the next lesson, we will cover another topic related to adjectives in Belarusian. Keep up the good work!
