Standard Moroccan Tamazight Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Standard Moroccan Tamazight learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Standard Moroccan Tamazight. We will look at how to form the future tense, as well as some examples of its use.

Forming the Future Tense

The future tense in Standard Moroccan Tamazight is formed by adding the suffix -ən to the verb stem. For example, the verb stem for the verb "to write" is ɣ- and the future tense of this verb is ɣən.

The future tense can also be formed by adding the prefix ɣa- to the verb stem. For example, the verb stem for the verb "to read" is ɛ- and the future tense of this verb is ɣaɛ.

Examples

Here are some examples of the future tense in Standard Moroccan Tamazight:

Standard Moroccan Tamazight Pronunciation English Translation
ɣən /ɣən/ I will write
ɣaɛ /ɣaɛ/ I will read
ɣəs /ɣəs/ I will speak
ɣaɣ /ɣaɣ/ I will go
ɣəz /ɣəz/ I will eat

Usage

The future tense is used to express an action that will take place in the future. It can also be used to express a wish or a desire.

For example:

  • ɣən ɣəməz - I will come (action that will take place in the future)
  • ɣən ɣəməz ɣəd ɣəz - I will come and eat (action that will take place in the future)
  • ɣən ɣəməz ɣəd ɣəz ɣəd ɣəs - I will come, eat and speak (action that will take place in the future)
  • ɣən ɣəməz ɣəd ɣəz ɣəd ɣəs ɣəd ɣaɣ - I will come, eat, speak and go (action that will take place in the future)
  • ɣən ɣəməz ɣəd ɣəz ɣəd ɣəs ɣəd ɣaɣ ɣəd ɣaɛ - I will come, eat, speak, go and read (action that will take place in the future)
