Central Kurdish Grammar - Plurals

Hi Central Kurdish learners!😊
Learning Central Kurdish Grammar!

Central Kurdish has a complex system of plurals, which can be difficult to understand for learners. In this lesson, we will look at the different ways to form plurals in Central Kurdish.

Nouns

Nouns in Central Kurdish are usually made plural by adding the suffix -an. For example:

  • xan (house) becomes xanan (houses)
  • zor (strength) becomes zoran (strengths)

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, nouns ending in -î or -ê do not take the suffix -an. Instead, they take the suffix -in. For example:

  • dilî (heart) becomes dilîn (hearts)
  • bêr (well) becomes bêrin (wells)

Irregular Plurals

Some nouns have irregular plurals. For example:

  • şev (night) becomes şevan (nights)
  • çem (mountain) becomes çeman (mountains)

Adjectives

Adjectives in Central Kurdish are usually made plural by adding the suffix -an. For example:

  • zêr (beautiful) becomes zêran (beautiful)
  • serkeftî (successful) becomes serkeftîn (successful)

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, adjectives ending in -î or -ê do not take the suffix -an. Instead, they take the suffix -in. For example:

  • xweş (happy) becomes xweşin (happy)
  • serbixwe (independent) becomes serbixwein (independent)

Irregular Plurals

Some adjectives have irregular plurals. For example:

  • (without) becomes bêyan (without)
  • ser (head) becomes seran (heads)

Verbs

Verbs in Central Kurdish are usually made plural by adding the suffix -in. For example:

  • dixwazin (want) becomes dixwazinin (want)
  • bibin (become) becomes bibinin (become)

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, verbs ending in -î or -ê do not take the suffix -in. Instead, they take the suffix -an. For example:

  • dizanin (know) becomes dizanan (know)
  • bibînin (see) becomes bibînan (see)

Irregular Plurals

Some verbs have irregular plurals. For example:

  • dikin (do) becomes dekan (do)
  • bûn (be) becomes binan (be)
