Japanese Grammar - Pronouns

Hi Japanese learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing Japanese pronouns. Pronouns are words that replace nouns in a sentence. They are used to make sentences more concise and easier to understand. In Japanese, there are several types of pronouns, each with its own unique usage. Let's take a look at them!

Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns are used to refer to people or things. In Japanese, there are two types of personal pronouns: the first person pronoun and the second person pronoun.

First Person Pronouns

The first person pronouns are used to refer to oneself. In Japanese, there are three first person pronouns: watashi, boku, and ore.

  • Watashi (私): This is the most common first person pronoun. It is used by both men and women, and is considered to be the most polite form of address.
  • Boku (僕): This pronoun is used mainly by men, and is considered to be less formal than watashi.
  • Ore (俺): This pronoun is used mainly by men, and is considered to be the least formal of the three.

Second Person Pronouns

The second person pronouns are used to refer to someone else. In Japanese, there are two second person pronouns: anata and kimi.

  • Anata (貴方): This is the most common second person pronoun. It is used to refer to someone of equal or higher status.
  • Kimi (君): This pronoun is used to refer to someone of lower status.

Demonstrative Pronouns

Demonstrative pronouns are used to point out specific people or things. In Japanese, there are four demonstrative pronouns: kore, sore, are, and dore.

  • Kore (これ): This pronoun is used to refer to something near the speaker.
  • Sore (それ): This pronoun is used to refer to something near the listener.
  • Are (あれ): This pronoun is used to refer to something far from both the speaker and the listener.
  • Dore (どれ): This pronoun is used to refer to something that is not specified.

Interrogative Pronouns

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions. In Japanese, there are three interrogative pronouns: nani, dare, and doko.

  • Nani (何): This pronoun is used to ask "what?".
  • Dare (誰): This pronoun is used to ask "who?".
  • Doko (どこ): This pronoun is used to ask "where?".

Relative Pronouns

Relative pronouns are used to introduce relative clauses. In Japanese, there are two relative pronouns: kare and sore.

  • Kare (彼): This pronoun is used to refer to a male.
  • Sore (それ): This pronoun is used to refer to a female.
