South Azerbaijani is one of the languages spoken in Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey. Learning South Azerbaijani can be challenging but rewarding. If you are a complete beginner, you will need to start with basic greetings and introductions. In this lesson, we will explore the most common South Azerbaijani greetings, such as hello, goodbye, and how are you.

Hello

In South Azerbaijani, there are different ways to say hello, depending on the time of the day and the level of formality. Here are some of the most common South Azerbaijani greetings:

Note that when greeting someone formally, you should use the more formal "salam", "xoş amedin" instead of "xoş amedi".

Goodbye

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English

It's worth noting that "Xudahafiz" is a formal and traditional farewell expression that means "May God protect you".

How are you?

In South Azerbaijani, people often ask "Necəsən?" (pronounced "naj-sen") to enquire about someone's well-being. Here are some possible responses:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English

Keep in mind that "yaşasın" is a response that mainly used among friends, while "Xub-e-m" is a more formal response.
