Galician subject pronouns are one of the core elements of the language. They are essential for expressing who or what is performing an action in a sentence. In this lesson, you will learn about the different Galician subject pronouns and how to use them correctly.

What are Subject Pronouns?

Subject pronouns are words that replace nouns in a sentence as the subject. In English, subject pronouns are "I," "you," "he," "she," "it," "we," and "they." Galician subject pronouns are similar, although they differ slightly in spelling and pronunciation.

Galician Subject Pronouns

Here are the Galician subject pronouns:

Galician Pronunciation English
Eu [ew] I
Tu [tu] You (informal singular)
Vostede [bosˈteðe] You (formal singular)
El [el] He
Ela [ela] She
Nós [noːs] We
Vós [vɔs] You (informal plural)
Vostedes [bosˈteðes] You (formal plural)
Eles [eles] They (masculine)
Elas [elas] They (feminine)

Usage

Subject pronouns are used in place of nouns as the subject in a sentence. Let's take a look at some examples:

  • Eu son un estudante. (I am a student.)
  • Ela traballa en unha tenda. (She works in a shop.)
  • Nós falamos galego. (We speak Galician.)
  • Eles xogan ao fútbol. (They play soccer.)

In these examples, the subject pronouns "Eu," "Ela," "Nós," and "Eles" are used instead of the nouns "un estudante" (a student), "unha tenda" (a shop), "galego" (Galician), and "fútbol" (soccer).

Note that subject pronouns are not always necessary in Galician sentences. For example, the sentence "Traballa en unha tenda" (Works in a shop) does not use a subject pronoun. In this case, the context of the sentence makes it clear that "ela" (she) is the subject.

Summary

Subject pronouns are an essential part of Galician grammar. They are used to replace nouns as the subject in a sentence. Galician subject pronouns differ slightly from English subject pronouns in spelling and pronunciation, so be sure to practice using them regularly to become familiar with their use.

Remember that subject pronouns may not always be necessary in Galician sentences. Make sure to consider the context of the sentence before deciding whether or not to use a subject pronoun.

In the next lesson, we will learn about object pronouns and how to use them in Galician sentences.
