As a teacher of Standard Moroccan Tamazight for twenty years, I am excited to share with you the names of family members in Tamazight and how to use them in sentences. Family is an important aspect of Moroccan culture, and having a solid understanding of these terms will help you navigate social situations with ease.

Immediate Family

Here are the most common family members you may encounter within immediate family:

Parents

Tamazight Pronunciation English
أب ab father
أم am mother

Siblings

Tamazight Pronunciation English
أخ akh brother
أخت akht sister

Extended Family

Extended family is highly valued in Moroccan culture. Here are some terms for extended family members:

Grandparents

Tamazight Pronunciation English
جد jd grandfather
جدة jda grandmother

Aunts and Uncles

Tamazight Pronunciation English
خال khal maternal uncle
دادو dadu paternal uncle
خالة khala maternal aunt
عمة 3ma paternal aunt

Cousins

Tamazight Pronunciation English
ابن العم ibn l3m male cousin (son of uncle)
ابن الخالة ibn lkhalaa male cousin (son of aunt)
بنت العم bnt l3m female cousin (daughter of uncle)
بنت الخالة bnt lkhalaa female cousin (daughter of aunt)

Using Family Members in Sentences

Now that you know the names of family members in Tamazight, you can use them in sentences to better communicate with others. Here are some examples:

  • His grandfather is very old.

    • جديد يالو مزين.

    • ابناء العم و الخالة ديالنا راح يديرو لينا زيارة خلال الأسبوع الجاي.
