Standard Moroccan Tamazight Grammar → Introduction to Tamazight → Plural Nouns

As a Standard Moroccan Tamazight language teacher, I am pleased to introduce you to the topic of plural nouns. In Tamazight, plural nouns are formed differently than in English, so it's important to understand the rules to communicate effectively. In this lesson, you will learn how to form and use plural nouns in Tamazight.

Take some time to dive into these other pages after completing this lesson: Verb have in tamazight & 0 to A1 Course.

Forming Plural Nouns

In Tamazight, there are several ways to form plural nouns:

  • Adding "-en" or "-in" at the end of the singular noun, depending on gender. For example, "amghar" (a man) becomes "amgharen" in the plural, and "taddart" (a village) becomes "taddarin".
  • Changing the vowel in the singular noun. For example, "taddart" (a village) becomes "tidirt".
  • Adding a prefix before the singular noun. For example, "tayri" (a bird) becomes "attayarin".

Keep in mind that there are some irregular plural forms that don't follow these rules, so it's important to learn them as well.

Here are some examples of plural nouns in Tamazight:

Standard Moroccan Tamazight Pronunciation English
aghilas aɣilas horses
yirr yirr moon(s)
irum irum city(ies)

Using Plural Nouns

In Tamazight, plural nouns are used to indicate more than one of something. Here are some examples of how to use plural nouns in sentences:

  • "Asmi igoudar d amgharen" (I see a group of men)
  • "Ad nekkes taddarin" (I'm going to the villages)
  • "Ur nesɣa ara imuragren" (I don't like cats)

It's important to note that sometimes the context of the sentence will indicate whether a noun is singular or plural, since there is no separate form for singular adjectives in Tamazight. For example:

  • "Aghilas d yirẓen" (Horses are on the road)

Here, "yirẓen" is the plural form of "yir" (moon), but it is used in a singular sense to describe the road.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you have learned the basics of plural nouns in Tamazight! Remember to practice using plurals in your speech and writing to reinforce your learning. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you need help, and keep studying to achieve a solid understanding of Tamazight grammar and vocabulary.
