Basic Greetings

Before we dive into introducing ourselves, let's review some basic Korean greetings.

  • 안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo): This is the most common way to say "hello" in Korean. It is a formal greeting that can be used in any situation, whether you are meeting someone for the first time or talking to a friend.
  • 안녕 (annyeong): This is a more casual version of "hello" that is often used between friends or acquaintances.
  • 안녕히 계세요 (annyeonghi gyeseyo): This is a formal way to say "goodbye." It is often used when you are leaving someone's home or workplace.
  • 안녕히 가세요 (annyeonghi gaseyo): This is another formal way to say "goodbye." It is often used when you are leaving a public place, such as a restaurant or store.
  • 잘 가 (jal ga): This is a more casual way to say "goodbye." It is often used between friends or acquaintances.

Now that we have reviewed some basic greetings, let's move on to introducing ourselves.

Introducing Yourself

The most basic way to introduce yourself in Korean is to say your name. Here's how:

  • 제 이름은 [name] 입니다 (je ireumeun [name] imnida): "My name is [name]."

For example, if your name is Sarah, you would say:

  • 제 이름은 사라입니다 (je ireumeun Sara imnida).

When stating your name, it's common to put the word "제 (je)," meaning "my," in front of it.

Next, you may want to provide more information about yourself. Here are some common personal details that Koreans include when introducing themselves:

  • 나이 (nai): age
  • 직업 (jigeob): occupation
  • 출신 (chulsin): place of origin

To include any of these details, simply add them to your introduction sentence. For example:

  • 제 이름은 사라이고, 25살이에요 (je ireumeun Sarago, isipsae iraeyo): "My name is Sarah, and I'm 25 years old."
  • 저는 학생입니다 (jeoneun haksaengimnida): "I'm a student."
  • 출신은 미국이에요 (chulsineun Migukiraeyo): "I'm from the United States."

Another way to introduce yourself is to simply say your occupation or major:

  • 저는 학생입니다 (jeoneun haksaengimnida): "I'm a student."
  • 저는 회사원입니다 (jeoneun hoesa-wonimnida): "I'm an office worker."
  • 저는 경찰이에요 (jeoneun gyeongchaliraeyo): "I'm a police officer."
  • 저는 [major]을 전공했어요 ([major]eul jeongonghaesseoyo): "I majored in [major]."

It's important to note that in Korean culture, it's common to ask people their age or occupation, as it helps establish hierarchy and social status. So don't be surprised if you get asked these questions when meeting new people!

Examples

Let's look at some examples of introducing yourself in Korean:

Korean Pronunciation English
제 이름은 톰 입니다. Je ireumeun Tom imnida. My name is Tom.
제 이름은 안나이고, 27살이에요. Je ireumeun Annaigo, isipsichil-sal iraeyo. My name is Anna, and I'm 27 years old.
저는 대학생입니다. Jeoneun daehaksaengimnida. I'm a college student.
저는 의사입니다. Jeoneun uisa-imnida. I'm a doctor.

Now that you have learned how to introduce yourself in Korean, be sure to practice and use these skills when meeting new people!
