Conjunctions in Slovenian

Conjunctions are words that connect words, phrases, and clauses. They are an essential part of any language, and Slovenian is no exception. In this lesson, you will learn about the most common conjunctions in Slovenian and how to use them correctly.

Coordinating Conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions are used to connect words, phrases, and clauses of equal rank. In Slovenian, there are seven coordinating conjunctions: in (and), ali (or), ter (and, also), pa (but), no (but), oziroma (or rather), marveč (but).

Here are some examples:

Slovenian Pronunciation English

Greš peš ali z avtom? grehsh pesh ah-lee z av-tom Are you going on foot or by car?
Moj brat in sestra živita v Ljubljani. moy braht een sehs-trah zhee-vee-tah v lyoob-lyah-nee My brother and sister live in Ljubljana.

Rad imam sadje, no ne marim zelenjave. rahd ee-mahm sah-dyeh, noh neh mah-reem zeh-lehn-yah-veh I like fruit, but I don't like vegetables.

Subordinating Conjunctions

Subordinating conjunctions connect clauses of unequal rank. They establish a relationship of dependence between the main clause and the subordinate clause. Here are some common subordinating conjunctions in Slovenian: ko (when), ker (because), da (that), če (if), kot (as), kadar (when, if), tako da (so that).

Here are some examples:

Slovenian Pronunciation English
Ko prideš, mi pokliči. koh pree-desch, mee poh-klee-chee When you arrive, call me.
Nisem lačen, ker sem že jedel. nee-sehm lah-chyen, kehr sehm zheh yeh-del I'm not hungry, because I already ate.

Tako da boš razumel, bom počasi govoril. tah-koh dah bohsh rah-zoo-mehl, bohm poh-chah-see goh-voh-reel So you can understand, I will speak slowly.

Correlative Conjunctions

Correlative conjunctions are pairs of words used to connect elements of equal rank. These pairs include bodisi ... ali (either ... or), ne samo ... ampak tudi (not only ... but also), tako ... kakor (as ... as), tako ... kot (both ... and).

Here are some examples:

Slovenian Pronunciation English
Bodisi bom šel na zabavo, ali pa ostal doma. boh-dee-see bohm shel nah zah-bah-vo, ah-lee pah ohs-tahl dohma Either I will go to the party, or stay home.

Conclusion

In conclusion, conjunctions are an essential part of any language. In Slovenian, there are three types of conjunctions: coordinating, subordinating, and correlative. By mastering them, you'll be able to connect phrases and clauses and make your sentences more complex and interesting.
