SindhiGrammar0 to A1 Course → Basic Grammar Concepts → Prepositions and Conjunctions

Sindhi grammar may look intimidating at first glance, but once you understand basic grammar concepts such as prepositions and conjunctions, constructing sentences becomes much simpler. In this lesson, we will go over what prepositions and conjunctions are in Sindhi, how to use them correctly in sentences, and some common examples.

Prepositions

Prepositions are words that describe the relationship between two things. They generally show spatial, temporal, or directional relationships between two objects or ideas. In Sindhi, prepositions always come before the noun or pronoun that they are modifying.

There are many different prepositions in Sindhi, but some of the most common ones are:

  • سان - San - with
  • کان - Kan - from
  • تان - Tan - to, towards
  • جي - Ji - of, from, to
  • وارو - Waro - about, concerning, related to
  • سڀ - Sabh - including, along with
  • پيار - Pyar - close to, next to
  • اندر - Andar - inside
  • باهر - Bahar - outside
  • سواء - Swaiya - except
  • پاسي - Pasi - near, next to

Below are some examples of Sindhi prepositions used in sentences:

Sindhi Pronunciation English
منهنجي سان Menhiji san With us
انکان سان Ankhan san From there
تيکان تان Tikhan tan Towards there
جو پيار Jo pyar Close to it

Conjunctions

Conjunctions are words that join two clauses, phrases or words together. In Sindhi, they are used to connect different parts of a sentence, including subjects, verbs, and objects. There are three types of conjunctions in Sindhi:

  • Coordinating conjunctions - These join words, phrases, or clauses of equal importance. Examples are "او" (Oo - and) and "يا" (Ya - or).
  • Subordinating conjunctions - These join a dependent clause to an independent clause. Examples are "جڏهن" (Jadhen - when) and "جيڪڏهن" (Ji-kadhen - if).
  • Correlative conjunctions - These are used in pairs to join different parts of a sentence. Examples are "ڏملا/وه ڏملا" (Dumla/woh dumla - either/or) and "سڀجي ڏانهن" (Sabhji danhen - both/and).

Below are some examples of Sindhi conjunctions used in sentences:

Sindhi Pronunciation English
منهنجي ۽ تنهنجي Menhiji ahanji Ours and theirs
تقريبن ڀاچڻ آهي Taqreeban bhaachan aahi Almost found it
جڏهن توهان تنهنجي کان هٽيو Jadhen tohan tahanji kan hattyo When you came from there

Using Prepositions and Conjunctions in Sentences

Now that you know what prepositions and conjunctions are, it's important to know how to use them correctly in sentences. Remember that prepositions should always come before the noun or pronoun that they're modifying, and conjunctions should connect two parts of a sentence together.

Here are some more examples of prepositions and conjunctions used in sentences:

  • منهنجي جديد کتاب جي هڪ پانڄون فصل سان ختم ٿي || Menhiji jadeed kitab ji hik panjon fasal san khatam thi || Our new book ends with the fifth chapter.
  • ڪلاس جنهن کان هٽي ٿيا ۽ جو شام شاگرد سنگھڻيو آهي || Class jenhan kan hatti thiya aa jo sham shagird sanghariyo aahi || The students who came to class and practiced with us in the evening.
  • خط ماٺر ۽ ڀليون آچيون سان هڪ کلھار ختم کيو || Khat maathar ji bheleo aan sattiyo saan hik kalhaar khatam kyo || The letter ended with greetings and well wishes.

As you become more confident using prepositions and conjunctions, you'll be able to form more complex and nuanced sentences.
