Welsh Grammar - Give your Opinion

Hi Welsh learners! 😊 In this lesson, we will explore how to give your opinion in Welsh. Making your opinion known can be daunting in any language, but it's important to be able to express yourself clearly and confidently. We'll cover some useful vocabulary, grammar, and cultural aspects of giving opinions in Welsh.

Vocabulary

Before we start expressing our opinions, let's take a look at some Welsh words and phrases that will come in handy.

Welsh Pronunciation English
Barn /baːrn/ Opinion
Yn fy marn i /ən vɪ maːrn i/ In my opinion
Y farn honno /ə varn honno/ That opinion
Crëaduriaid meddyliau /krei̯adɨˈraɪ̯d mɛðˈdəljaɨ̯/ Creatures of thought
Craffu /ˈkraːf.i/ To scrutinize/examine closely
Tystiolaeth /təsˈtjɔlaiθ/ Evidence/testimony
Hanes /haneːs/ History
Statws /ˈstatʊs/ Status

Useful phrases:

  • In my opinion - Yn fy marn i
  • I think - Dwi'n meddwl
  • According to me - Yn ôl fi

Grammar

To give your opinion in Welsh, you can use the verb "Meddwl" which means "To think". You can just add the subject of the sentence after that verb:

For example:

  • Dwi'n meddwl bod y tywydd yn boeth heddiw. (I think the weather is hot today.)
  • Ti'n meddwl bod y ffilm yn dda. (You think the film is good.)

Another way to express opinion is by using the phrase 'I think that'. In Welsh, this is translated as 'Dwi'n meddwl bod'.

For example:

  • Dwi’n meddwl bod hi’n hen traddodiad. - I think it is an old tradition.
  • Dwi'n meddwl bod Bae Colwyn yn le hyfryd. - I think Colwyn Bay is a lovely place.

You can also use the phrase 'In my opinion' to add emphasis to your viewpoint. This is translated as 'Yn fy marn i'.

For example:

  • Yn fy marn i, mae'r gwaith yn llwyddiant mawr. - In my opinion, the work is a great success.
  • Yn fy marn i, mae'r Fenter yng Nghaerdydd yn werth ei chwilio. - In my opinion, the enterprise in Cardiff is worth investigating.

For a more formal tone, you can use the phrase 'Y farn honno'.

For example:

  • Y farn honno yw … (That opinion is…)

Cultural Tips

Welsh people have a strong connection to their culture and language, and this is reflected in how opinions are expressed. If you're looking to give your opinion in Welsh, there are a few cultural tips to keep in mind.

Firstly, always show respect to the person you are speaking to. Welsh people are known for being warm and friendly, but it's important to be mindful of cultural differences.

Secondly, try to use formal language when expressing your opinion in a professional or academic context. This can help you to be taken seriously and show that you have thought about your viewpoint.

Lastly, remember that Welsh people often value tradition and history. If you can relate your opinion to Welsh heritage or culture, this will help to build rapport with your listeners.

Examples

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Pam wyt ti'n meddwl bod y sioe wedi methu? (Why do you think the show failed?)
  • Person 2: Dwi'n meddwl bod y cysylltiad anfudur yn rhyfedd. (I think the connection with nature was weird.)
  • Person 1: Beth yw dy farn ti am y caneuon newydd? (What’s your opinion about the new songs?)
  • Person 2: Yn fy marn i, mae nhw'n drist. (In my opinion, they are sad.)
  • Person 1: Sut mae dy farn ti am y penderfyniad diweddar? (What's your opinion about the recent decision?)
  • Person 2: Y farn honno yw… (That opinion is...) Ie, dwi'n cytuno â'r hyn a ddywedwyd. (Yes, I agree with what was said. )

Practice

Practice giving your opinion on different topics. Use the vocabulary and grammar presented above to express yourself as clearly as possible. Remember to always be respectful and mindful of cultural differences.
