Northern Kurdish Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Northern Kurdish learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Northern Kurdish. We will look at the different forms of the verb and how to use them in sentences.

The verb "be" is used to describe a state or condition. In Northern Kurdish, it is conjugated differently depending on the subject of the sentence. The verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

Subject Pronunciation English Translation
ez ez I
tu tu you (singular)
î î he/she/it
em em we
ji ji you (plural)
înan înan they

For example, if we want to say "I am happy", we would say "ez xwînim". Here, "xwînim" is the verb "to be" conjugated for the subject "ez" (I).

Let's look at some more examples:

  • Person 1: Tu xwînî? (Are you?)
  • Person 2: Erê, ez xwînim. (Yes, I am.)
  • Person 1: Î xwîne? (Is he/she/it?)
  • Person 2: Erê, î xwîne. (Yes, he/she/it is.)
  • Person 1: Em xwînin? (Are we?)
  • Person 2: Erê, em xwînin. (Yes, we are.)
  • Person 1: Ji xwînin? (Are you (plural)?)
  • Person 2: Erê, ji xwînin. (Yes, you (plural) are.)
  • Person 1: Înan xwînin? (Are they?)
  • Person 2: Erê, înan xwînin. (Yes, they are.)

Now that you know how to use the verb "be" in Northern Kurdish, you can start using it in your conversations. To improve your Northern Kurdish Grammar, you can also use the Polyglot Club website. Find native speakers and ask them any questions!
