Tatar Grammar - Negation

Hi Tatar learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the basics of negation in Tatar. We will look at how to form negative sentences and how to use them in everyday conversations.

Negation is an important part of any language, and Tatar is no exception. In Tatar, there are two ways to express negation: using the negative particle ma and using the negative verb kemä. Let's take a look at each of these in more detail.

Negative Particle ma

The negative particle ma is used to express negation in Tatar. It is placed after the verb or adjective that is being negated. For example:

Tatar Pronunciation English Translation
Мин укырмам. miŋ ukyrmam I don't understand.
Мин туган дегенмен. miŋ tuɣan deɣenmen I'm not tired.
Мин бу хатта дегенмен. miŋ bu xatta deɣenmen I don't have this book.
Мин бу китап дегенмен. miŋ bu kitap deɣenmen I don't have this book.

As you can see, the negative particle ma is placed after the verb or adjective that is being negated.

Negative Verb kemä

The negative verb kemä is used to express negation in Tatar. It is placed before the verb or adjective that is being negated. For example:

Tatar Pronunciation English Translation
Кемә укырмам. kemä ukyrmam I don't understand.
Кемә туган дегенмен. kemä tuɣan deɣenmen I'm not tired.
Кемә бу хатта дегенмен. kemä bu xatta deɣenmen I don't have this book.
Кемә бу китап дегенмен. kemä bu kitap deɣenmen I don't have this book.

As you can see, the negative verb kemä is placed before the verb or adjective that is being negated.
